Openshaw Park was opened by Prince Albert in 1888 and is named after local businessman Thomas Openshaw who donated the land and money for development. The adjacent St Thomas' Church was named after his uncle (also called Thomas). It is believed that bowling has been played in the park since at least 1907. The second bowling green was opened in 1934 as mentioned on the council website which also states that the current clubhouse was built in the late 1960s.
A dusty history of past triumphs!
